VoIP losing its significance?
VON editor Tara Seals, writing prior to the VON conference that began today, said she thinks the industry is about to enter an era of "post-VoIP communications," as VoIP technology increasingly becomes "irrelevant." Seals argues that packet-switched voice has become so popular and commoditized that it has lost its significance as a technology of note.
Andy Abramsom, writing about the post on his blog VoIP Watch, agrees with Seals that, instead of stoking the coals of debates around VoIP technology specifically, the conversations at the show and in general should be around the broader question of leveraging IP voice in other applications for added value. Abramson said VoIP has entered the mainstream due to cable deployments of the service and the clear business case presented by the cost savings from using IP telephony.
The next step, Seals and Abramson agreed, is to examine ways to use IP telephony for collaboration and productivity enhancements, and I'm sure the leaders at the VON show will have some interesting perspectives on the best and most lucrative ways to do so.
