Harris Corp. (NYSE: HRS (http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=HRS)), a Melbourne, Fla. based company, has been in the radio communications business since the 1950's, so you would think either there would be no way they could be living in the IP-comm world, or they've been in the game long enough to spot the opportunities and adapt their business to go with the flow of the state of the art. It seems that they have indeed adapted to the times.

The company is releasing a new push-to-talk feature aimed at enterprises interested in setting up instant managed group communications over their networks. The BeOn solution provides traditional land mobile radio features such as group calling, individual calling, group scanning, distress calls, and dispatch/administrative services on top of wireless services like location, presence and text messaging. With the service you can communicate instantly with one person or a whole group with one button. The solution uses VoIP over 3G and 4G networks to deliver its functionality using its VIDA IP platform currently deployed by public safety users.

The service will release on time wireless carriers with pricing set by the carriers themselves. Being VoIP based, the push-to-talk service will work on most smartphones although Harris is developing rugged handsets to match the purpose of the service.
