Twitter, the much-hyped "real time" IP communications company, is opening its users' feeds up to targeted advertising, as the service searches for a way to produce revenue from its rapidly expanding user base. The company changed its terms of service to allow advertisements that "may be targeted to the Content or information on the Services, queries made through the Services, or other information," according to a Computer Weekly article (http://www.computerweekly.com/Articles/2009/09/14/237688/twitter-leaves-advertising-option-open-with-new-terms-of.htm).
According to comScore metrics quoted in a Reuters article (http://www.reuters.com/article/technology-media-telco-SP/idUSN1042227220090911), Twitter reached 44.5 million unique visitors in June, presenting a very attractive audience for the sort of targeted ads the new service terms allow. However, the content on Twitter will present branding issues for advertisers, as its quality, validity and potential offensiveness are roadblocks to positive brand associations. While the new terms allow for targeted advertising, the company has yet to deploy any such ads to users.
Various business uses for Twitter have been trialed and discussed, such as instant internal communication and customer outreach, but the company appears to be hard pressed to monetize Twitter in this manner. Let FierceVoIP know what you think about Twitter's potential in the enterprise on the service @fiercevoip (http://www.twitter.com/fiercevoip).
